Best Hiking Trails in Phoenix, Arizona (My Personal Favorites)

One of the best things about living in Arizona is the hiking.

Phoenix has some incredible mountain trails, desert scenery, sunsets, and outdoor spots that people from around the world travel to experience.

Whether you’re into:

  • fitness
  • photography
  • meditation
  • nature
  • cardio
  • mountain views
  • or simply escaping the city…

There are some amazing hiking trails around Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and surrounding Arizona cities.

These are some of my personal favorite hiking spots in the Valley.

#1 — Camelback Mountain

Camelback is probably the most iconic hike in Phoenix.

If you want:

  • incredible city views
  • a hard workout
  • steep climbing
  • and one of the most famous Arizona hiking experiences…

This is the spot.

The hike can be intense, especially during summer, but the views at the top are worth it.

Camelback attracts:

  • fitness enthusiasts
  • tourists
  • athletes
  • influencers
  • and serious hikers from all over Arizona.

Sunrise and sunset here are amazing.

#2 — Piestewa Peak

Piestewa Peak is one of the best “daily workout” hikes in Phoenix.

A lot of locals use this trail almost like outdoor cardio training.

The elevation and stair-like climbing make it a strong leg workout without needing a gym.

The views overlooking Phoenix are excellent, especially early in the morning.

#3 — South Mountain Park

South Mountain is massive and has some of the best hiking variety in Arizona.

You can find:

  • beginner trails
  • advanced trails
  • mountain biking trails
  • scenic desert views
  • and long hiking routes.

This is one of the best places in Phoenix if you want more space and less crowded hiking compared to Camelback.

#4 — Papago Park

Papago is one of the easiest and most relaxing hikes in Phoenix.

Great for:

  • beginners
  • families
  • photography
  • casual walks
  • tourists
  • and sunset views.

Hole-in-the-Rock is especially popular and gives great views without requiring a difficult climb.

#5 — Tom’s Thumb Trail

Located near Scottsdale, Tom’s Thumb is one of the most scenic hikes in Arizona.

The rock formations and desert scenery make it feel very different from some of the more crowded city hikes.

This trail is better for people wanting a longer outdoor experience with incredible desert mountain views.

Phoenix Is One of the Best Outdoor Cities in America

A lot of people move to Arizona because of the lifestyle.

Between:

  • hiking
  • cycling
  • mountain biking
  • golf
  • fitness
  • sunshine
  • and year-round outdoor activities…

Phoenix has become one of the top active lifestyle cities in the United States.

Whether you live in:

  • Phoenix
  • Scottsdale
  • Tempe
  • Mesa
  • Chandler
  • Gilbert
  • Glendale
  • Peoria
  • Surprise
  • Goodyear
  • Paradise Valley
  • Fountain Hills
  • Queen Creek
  • or nearby Arizona cities…

There are endless outdoor adventures around the Valley.
